My fellow Americans: two things are inevitable, death and taxes. Don't forget that tax returns OR extension filings are still due April 15th this year.
That wasn't the PSA. This is: the IRS and many states have FREE online filing options.
IRS Free File has two options - if you're below a certain income threshold, you can use the free versions of various providers' online services. (The income threshold uses Adjusted Gross Income, and varies by provider.) If you're above that, you can still do Free Fillable Forms. The instructions can be a bit rubbish (it may help to have the instructions or even the PDF version of the real form instructions open in another tab), and the interface is deliberately clunky. But it's not painful and doesn't take long if you have all your necessary paperwork lined up ready to go. (I got through both federal and state in around 45 minutes, and that's including Googling for the websites because I didn't bookmark them last year and delays/cussing because my browser saved the auto-generated password for the federal free file but NOT the username so I had to get a reminder email.)
Unfortunately, there is no handy state-by-state list that I've found for free file options, so you'll have to check what options there are for your state.
