As long as you're dressed for it, it's not bad! (I've found layers and having a blanket on the kayak seat so your bum stays warm are key. And keeping your feet dry, obviously.)
And I came back a sweaty mess, because I did try with the kayak - it looked like there was only thin, breakable ice from the boat ramp to the first bend, and a fair patch of ice-free water in the ponds beyond. I was pretty sure if I could make it that far, I could get all the way to the creek. Alas, there was thicker, unbreakable ice...
