Summary: The other children of Elrond aren't exactly twiddling their thumbs while Anariel is resting up.
Word Count: 600
Note: Skipping ahead a bit in an effort to get Anariel out of Lorien by the end of the month...if I take several days on Finduilas, Angrod, and Eldalotë, she may well be there until next August.
“Your brothers appear to be sneaking out,” Maeglin observed from his perch in the window seat.
“Idiots,” Tindomiel snorted, not looking up from her worktable. “Don’t worry about it, let them go.”
“They are carrying packs for a journey of some days.”
“Of course they are, because they don’t have any idea where they’re going or how far it is,” she replied. “If they want to do things the hard way, they can suit themselves.”
“I thought you would wish to accompany them. They are going to meet up with your sister, surely?”
Tindomiel smiled at her husband. Silly man had a lot to learn about siblings, not that she could blame him – he only had one. At least, so far. His little sister was still young enough to not be charging around Aman on her own yet.
“No doubt. But again, unlike Ennor, they don’t know their way around here. A little stumbling around lost will be good for them.”
“I’m sure they looked at maps first. It’s not difficult to work out how to get to Lorien.”
“You’re trying really hard to get me to join this expedition,” Tindomiel said cautiously. “Any particular reason?”
“I am curious to meet your sister also. And you might speed the journey considerably.”
“Don’t worry, you’ll meet her soon enough,” Tindomiel assured him, privately hoping the introduction went well enough that she didn’t have to remind him he’d wanted to meet her. “But you won’t get there any faster with El and El. Anariel isn’t one for staying put in places she doesn’t particularly want to be. It’s been weeks and she’s normally raring to escape the healing hall after a couple days. They may head for Lorien, but I doubt she’s there anymore. And since she doesn’t know where she’s going any more than they do, she could be pretty much anywhere.”
He gave her a Look.
“I want to finish this book first. They’re not going to find her that quick. And it isn’t as if we can’t catch up whenever. Let them burn off their frustrations tramping around a day or two first. They’re big boys, they’ll be fine. Besides, it will give me a chance to try something.”
Now Maeglin’s look was wary and mildly concerned.
“Does this have to do with whatever Aunt Melian said when they were still on the ship?” he asked cautiously.
“Yes,” she admitted. “But it’s nothing bad.”
At his raised eyebrow, she sighed.
“I’m going to try using the Key to go where they are without them telling me first.”
“This sounds like a terrible plan,” he pointed out. “Your brothers don’t know what you intend and may well be trying to keep themselves concealed. It would be more sensible to try this first with someone who knows what you intend and is in on the test.”
She didn’t like the idea, but she didn’t say no, and that was enough for him to go on.
“I won’t tell you where we are unless you ask, but it would give you a slightly better reference point for a first attempt. It would also mean there is someone who would think to ask Aunt Melian first if you have trouble. Your brothers are more likely to seek Aunt Galadriel.”
She only pouted for a minute before yielding. This wouldn’t be the first time he’d been the voice of reason, even if she hated to admit it.
“Fine, go catch up with them!”
He smiled and gave her a quick kiss.
“I will see you in a few days, my love. Enjoy your book.”
