Title: Two of a Kind?
Rating: FR13
Crossover: Knives Out
Summary: Faith isn't sure how far she trusts Ransom.
Word Count: 440
Note: Today was not better. Writing was like pulling crocodile teeth. Let's hope a good night's sleep and no work tomorrow make a difference.
Faith glared at the guy on the other side of the table.
“Quit with the games. You wrote and asked me to come. What do you want?”
Hugh Ransom Drysdale gave her a grin that made her want to punch him. It was every smug rich dude she’d ever encountered – boys completely sure consequences were for lesser people, because absolutely everything in their experience had backed up that assumption. It was doubly infuriating given her supposed brother was in for murder.
“I wanted to meet you,” he replied.
She couldn’t help the snort.
“Sure, pull the other one.”
“Really.”
He sounded uncomfortably sincere.
“I have a lot of time on my hands, and funny thing, my trust fund didn’t have any clauses in it about forfeiting it if I got convicted of anything. Even murder. So seeing as I had nothing better to do, I hired a private investigator to look you up for me. I was curious.”
Faith frowned.
“How the hell did you even know about me in the first place?” Faith asked.
As far as she knew, her biological father hadn’t even known she existed.
He laughed.
“Dad let a few things slip last time we talked. Turns out he wished he’d taken more of an interest in his other child’s life. You’re the less disappointing one, apparently. To be fair, I don’t think he knows about your conviction. And I don't see any need to enlighten him either.”
Faith smirked. She’d lay money rich boy didn’t know about her conviction either. Red was damn good at what she did. That record was well and truly sealed.
“I can’t help thinking both of us might have avoided prison stints if dear old dad had been honest with everyone. Sure, my mother would have ditched him if she’d known, but I feel like having another person around who appreciated just how fucked up my family is would have been helpful.”
“Sounds like a solid benefit for you. Not seeing how I win anything in your fantasy scenario.”
This time Drysdale hesitated, like maybe he wasn’t entirely sure saying it was a good idea. Maybe the PI he’d hired had actually found a few real things.
“He’s never going to be father of the year material, but he wouldn’t have left you on the streets if he’d actually manned up when he should have.”
Faith didn’t argue for one reason – because she could hear the anger and disgust in what might actually be her brother’s voice.
She already had questions, but now she had a few more. Maybe she should take Benoit Blanc up on his offer to meet.
