Why, Ikea, why? The one time I'm actually willing to pay for delivery, having made the calculation that it's worth the time and energy it saves me, is the one time you tell me the thing I want can't be ordered online. What bovine excrement is this?

I am doing much better recently with local vendors who deliver and put the stuff together also for prices comparable to Ikea without delivery (and slightly better quality of material). I have constructed my last piece of Ikea furniture after some really labor-intensive pieces and a very slow learning curve on my part.

In NYC, maybe that's doable. For where I am and what I'm after - a worktable, Ikea is actually pretty reasonable. The item I was griping about is literally a large wood tabletop. I doubt I'm finding a non-plywood equivalent anywhere local to me for less. And for me, putting together Ikea is like doing slightly larger Lego. I've got Ikea stuff that's going on 20 years old, so I've got no complaints. (My college desk and bookshelves are still going strong. The most I've had to do is replace a couple screws holding the keyboard tray on.)
