I think it's partly the appeal of having an obscure niche interest - it is that in Britain: for many years, if he wanted to observe american football being played, he had to listen to American Armed Forces Radio at dead of night and get thin magazines full of statistics delivered from the US covered in airmail stamps, which is a level of fandom devotion where you start to seriously wonder if the obscurity and difficulty of access IS the point :-D But *now* it's actually shown on TV, and I think he still hasn't quite got over the euphoria!
