Title: Thrown
Rating: FR13
Crossover: Umbrella Academy
Summary: What should have been a routine patrol develops a slight wrinkle.
Word Count: 575
Note: Very little writing time today (unexpected family time.) Short, quick, hopefully coherent.

Faith’s eyes narrowed.

The trajectory of the throwing knife that had just missed her – and only because of Slayer reflexes – was not natural. There was no whiff of mojo to explain it. The guy who’d thrown it didn’t quite ping as normal human, though.

She sighed. Why did nothing ever go easy? This should have been a routine patrol.

But easy way or hard way, she had a vamp to slay. Even if Knife Boy insisted on getting in the way in the mistaken impression he was somehow helping. (She wasn’t sure who he thought he was helping, come to think of it. The vamp? Dude was a foot taller than her. Most guys looking to save the day would have stepped in on her side.)

First things first.

Thankfully the vamp clarified the situation by taking a swing while she was considering her options.
Knife Boy reassessed – the next one went whizzing into the vamp’s chest. The moment of irritation (vamp) and complete surprise (Knife Boy) was the distraction Faith needed to slam her stake home.

“What the hell-” Knife Boy demanded as Faith caught his knife before it could fall to the ground.

“Hell’s got nothing to do with me,” Faith chuckled. “Though I’m pretty sure it’s where the dear dustpile there is heading.”

She paused.

“I flip this back to you it’s not going to get thrown at me again, is it? Cause I gotta tell ya, I get kinda touchy about that sort of thing.”

She waited, but Knife Boy couldn’t muster a coherent response.

“What the- Who the- Wh-“

“Right. I’m going to set your knife down all slow and polite, and you’re going to wait over there until I back away.”

“Diego!”

Great, more company. Hopefully they could take care of Knife Boy.

“Oh, hi! Look, Diego made a new friend!”

Faith almost asked who the newcomer was talking to, until she caught the tell-tale traces just at the edge of vision, and focused. New guy had a ghost tagging along.

“Can you two take care of this guy? He just had a bit of a shock.”

To her surprise, the guy and the ghost regarded each other and then turned back to her.

“You can see him?”

The living one looked shocked, the dead one almost excited.

“Yeah, sorry to burst your bubble, but you guys aren’t even the weirdest thing I’ve seen this month. Anyway, can you take…”

“Diego,” the living member of the duo replied. “I’m Klaus.”

He gave her an exaggerated wave with a hand that had ‘hello’ tattooed on the palm.

“And I’m Ben,” the ghost put in, with a glare at Klaus that suggested he didn’t trust Klaus to do intros.

“Nice to meet you. You guys need to take Diego home. Or at least somewhere he can sit down and have a drink – I feel like he might need one.”

“Are you sure you wouldn’t like to come with us?” Klaus asked. “We would love company.”

“Were you born on October 1, 1989?” Ben asked.

“No thank you, and not really up for giving out my birthdate to random guys or ghosts. I really gotta go.”

Faith took off before they could try any more delaying tactics. But she had a sinking feeling she hadn’t seen the last of Diego, Klaus and Ben. When you got right down to it, this wasn’t that big a town.

There were days she missed Sunnydale.
