If you're actually interested in wild mushrooms, I'd recommend the book "Mushrooms Demystified" by David Arora and there are also mycological societies and mushroom hunting clubs all over the place, probably at least one in your area. If you do get a kit to grow your own, make sure you check them when you harvest them for anything that looks off, since it's so easy for spores to be transported into the growing area. And if you do decide to try harvesting wild mushrooms, make sure the very first one you learn to identify is Amanita ocreata (the species of Destroying Angel that grows in North America).
