The end came with neither a bang nor a whimper, merely with exhausted resignation.

Makalaurë blinked and his older brother was not there anymore, leaving just him and an utterly indifferent sky.

No sound, not even of protest that the Silmarils were theirs and Varda’s hallowing never intended to keep them from their rightful owners. No dramatic scene, no mess. Maedhros was simply gone, and his Silmaril with him.

It seemed the only solution the greatest Noldorin tactician still alive had seen to the problem of their father’s jewels burning their unclean, bloodstained hands was painfully simple: let it burn.
