Ha! I read Hobbit when I was in primary school, then tried LotR when I was maybe 10 - it's the sequel, more Bilbo adventures, yay! Except...it wasn't. And the style had changed somewhat from something more clearly intended for kids, and at that age I wasn't able to adjust for the style and the lack of Bilbo and gave up before even getting to the party. Did not pick up the book again until most of the way through high school!
ETA: Also, I like the movies better now that they're on DVD and I can just forward through the scenes that bugged me the most. Thorin is angsting again? Forward. That scene in the goblin halls or in the barrels that seems like it exists just to sell the inevitable video game tie-in? Forward. Legolas defying all laws of physics? That I'll watch because I'm still trying to figure out how elves decide when gravity applies and when it doesn't.
