Day 30 - Another Whirlwind Adventure

Crossover: LotR/Silmarillion
Summary: Here they go again...
Word Count:  597
Note: Sorry, travelling on short notice. Hoping I will still get to post tomorrow. (This isn't where I meant to end the month!)

“Why do I get the feeling we’re not going back to Finwë’s House?”

Anariel glanced at her cousin.

They had barely made it out of the gates of the House of Nerdanel (and Butthead.) She hadn’t even gotten to contemplate the Fountain of Settling Scores yet to mull on where she might be able to incorporate the mechanisms for her prank without ruining the look of it.

“Woof,” Huan added.

“Well, yeah, I knew he’d figure it out sooner or later,” Anariel sighed. She was getting used to dealing with sarcasm from her dog. “I just thought it would be more than ten steps out the door.”

Or at least until they could be sure they were out of earshot of anyone in the house.

“You’re not going in the right direction and you haven’t asked,” Arador said patiently. “You have a bag, but you left your new wind-up thingamabob. You brought your sword, although you did wrap it up nicely so no one panics. It all adds up: you’re off somewhere else.”

“I want to meet my grandmother,” Anariel said.

No one could reasonably claim her Tirion relatives hadn’t had fair time. Heck, even some of the one who were normally Gondolin or Valimar relatives had gotten a look in.

After a few talks with Tinu, she wasn’t ready to go charging into Thingol’s territory – she was a little wary of Nimloth, particularly given her canine shadow/voice of reason.

But someone had been skipped entirely, and by rights she ought to have gotten to meet her right off the ship.

Anyone else might have asked her to clarify which grandmother she meant, but Arador picked it up easily.

“You could have just said,” he pointed out.

“Inside? No I couldn’t. At least one of them would have tried to talk me into going back to tell everyone else where I’m going. Except they would have phrased it ‘where you want to go’.”

She really did meant it about the extended family needing to get used to her being and adult, and coming and going without saying ‘mother may I?’ every time. That would get tedious really quickly.

“You don’t have to go if you don’t want to. I’m sure I can figure out how to get there.”

“As it happens, I know the way to Alqualondë,” Arador told her cheerfully.

“Woof.”

“Yeah, I know you know,” she told Huan. “Which is why I was pretty confident I couldn’t go too wrong.”

Turning to Arador, she continued, “but you don’t have spare clothes, and you’d look pretty funny trying to wear mine. Not that I’m saying not to come, our first road trip was fun, so this one probably will be too. Just wondering if we should slip in the back door so you can grab stuff and then duck back out.”

“You had the right idea in the first place,” he snorted. “If anyone sees us, you’re not getting away again so easily. I have clothes at our grandparents’ place, I’ll be fine.”

That threw Anariel for a second until she remembered that Grandmother’s grandparents lived in Alqualondë, and they were also Arador’s great-grands.

Every time she thought she was getting her head around how many relatives she had here…

“Right. Hi ho, hi ho, off to…other grandparents we go.”

That she needed the next quarter of an hour to explain the California reference – and the odd ideas Disney animators had had about dwarves, which amused Arador no end – was no bother at all when they had a whole day on the road to liven up.

Celeborn's mother?

I absolutely see her point about proceeding as she means to go on, as an adult.

Yes, I don’t blame Arador in the least for being so amused about Disney’s take on dwarves. I have to wonder if Buffy every told Kili about that and what his reaction was? Thank you for the new chapter, I enjoyed it and am looking forward to seeing how things go on the road trip next August.
