Day 15 - Doubt

Title: Doubt
Author: Grundy
Rating: FR13
Crossover: Hunger Games
Summary: Peeta doesn't like not knowing what's going on.
Word Count: 445
Note: Fits with my Paying Tribute series. Also, sorry, I intended to get back to Anariel's adventures tonight, but things ran over schedule all day long and I am out of both time and wakefulness.

Peeta kept his face pleasant as Ms Summers considered her cake selection.

Katniss had returned from her hunting trip with Dr. Aurelius in tow. He’d figured she’d be cranky and complaining – very few people were acceptable hunting partners in her book, and Peeta suspected Capitol citizens were worse than he was himself. (He finally got it, when Katniss explained it in the comfort of their living room one evening last winter. He didn’t have the practice to move the way she did. Until the Games, he’d never needed to move the way she did. She didn’t mind – except when he insisted on going with her when she hunted. Even now that hunting wasn’t a matter of survival.)

To his surprise, she’d been unusually calm and in a thoughtful mood. He knew better than to push her when she was like that, so he’d gone to the bakery. If the woods were Katniss’ favored thinking spot, the bakery was his.

Unfortunately, that had brought him face to face with their other new and not entirely comfortable neighbor, who was out shopping.

He wasn’t going to ask about her bank balance or anything, but clearly much of Ms Summers' wealth had survived the war intact if she could not only buy property in the former Victors’ Village but continue to buy the sort of provisions she’d been used to in the Capitol. (He’d seen things arriving that had to have been shipped in from the Capitol or Four.)

He’d have been happy to ignore her today, but Ms Summers had spotted him, so of course she’d greeted him, and he couldn’t very well snub her in public. Twelve hadn’t made up its collective mind about her yet, and he did owe the woman his life from their first Games.

He just couldn’t quite figure why she was here. Dr. Aurelius coming out to check on Katniss might have made sense. Dr. Aurelius moving to Twelve didn’t. Ms. Summers moving to Twelve made even less sense.

Peeta Mellark has learned the hard way that not having the full picture can lead to costly mistakes - ones whose cost can't be measured in money. And since it became clear that Aurelius and Summers were here to stay, he’s had a terrible feeling he and Katniss are missing a lot. He hasn’t raised it with Haymitch yet, but maybe it’s time he should. Even if he’s pretty sure the suspicious looks he’s seen on Haymitch a time or two when he didn’t realize anyone was looking mean that Haymitch hasn’t got the situation figured out yet either.

They’re still a team.

And he’s starting to feel like they might still be playing.

Extra thanks for adding to this series, I always enjoy it. And I’m also going to reiterate how glad I am that Peeta is finally becoming aware that the Games may be over, but the political maneuvering most assuredly is not and never will be.
