Hi there! I hope you are excited about both the exchange and your assignment! I am eager to see what you create!

This year's signup was done in a hurry - this summer has been non-stop from beginning to end.

Unlike past rounds, I don't really have prompts, just vague ideas and 'that sounds good'. If there's anything you're concerned about or want to run by me before you get too into writing, feel free to comment here - I have comment screening on. (I'm not fussed about anonymous or not, as a mod, I know who matched with me.) As far as ratings go, I will read whatever you're moved to write.

The DNWs are less because I never read them, than because I either need to be in a particular mood to read them, or because works them are very hit or miss for me. I don't want you putting your creative energy into something that will be anywhere from a toss-up to a long shot if I like it, or that I will only voluntarily read on a rainy day in November. (Just to be clear, I'm not saying my reading quirks make any sense whatsoever. Only that I have them and I'm doing my best to steer you clear of them.)

Finally, I would deeply appreciate if you could focus more on the good times and flashes of happiness and less on the angst and awfulness. I'm not asking for pure fluff, but please no dark/downer endings or "everyone dies". Eucatastrophe is good.

“Must I?” Edna Fairweather sighed.

She didn’t see what she was expected to learn from this. She’d been training for eight years now. St. Mary Mead was a quiet little village, nothing supernatural about it. Her mentor had been extremely clear on that point. Nor did she see why she needed to pose as a servant.

“Yes, if you wish to successfully complete your education.”

Dunworthy’s answer was brusque and entirely without sympathy.

“You are intent on being a Watcher. You show promise. But you still have much to learn, about normal humans as much as about vampires or demons. Think of this as a field assignment.”

“Playing housemaid to a spinster who isn’t quite advanced enough in years to be called a little old lady just yet? What do you expect me to learn from her?”

“The standards your class traditionally hold mine to, for a start.”

Dunworthy’s tone was sharp enough that Edna bit back her retort.

“But more than that, if you disabuse yourself of the notion that you already know everything, you may learn a great deal about people, observation, and deduction from your employer. She’s one of the sharpest women in England. If her name isn’t widely known, it’s certainly not because it isn’t worth knowing.”

“Why isn’t it known, then? And what exactly does she do?”

“It isn’t known because she chooses not to be known outside her own circle. Fortunately for you, that circle includes a Watcher or two in addition the current head of Scotland Yard.”

Edna blinked. The Council had connections in high places, of course, but she did not normally think of the Metropolitan Police and the Watchers in the same breath. Or even the same paragraph, really.

“As for what she does, she solves things. Mysteries, if you prefer. Generally based solely on her experience of village life and things she’s observed. A useful mentor for someone who’d quite like to run the Council someday. You’re lucky she’s willing to take you on, and luckier still she needed a new girl and thought that would be an excellent cover for your presence.”

Edna nodded dutifully, though privately she thought ‘niece’ would have done better. Ladies of this Jane Marple’s sort, who had not married because of the Great War, inevitably had any number of nieces, young cousins, daughters of cousins, and goddaughters. One of them visiting would hardly be out of the ordinary. And they would be in the room for all sorts of things a servant would be dismissed for.

“Mind both your manners and your attitude,” Dunworthy advised as she turned to go. “Miss Marple doesn’t suffer fools gladly – and girls who have an overly high opinion of themselves are dangerously close to fools in her book.”
