Summary: Anariel's been a good sport about the family reunion. Is a little quiet really so much to ask?
Word Count: 535
Note: Long day, not enough writing time, so this one's short. (It's also chronologically before the stories from Day 1 and Day 2.)
“But Nana, I just want a quiet family dinner,” Anariel sighed, doing her best not to sound whiny.
She was a grownup, and she would darn well sound like it!
“Please darling, humor Ammë?” her mother asked, sounding just as unenthused at the prospect as Anariel felt. “Just this evening. And it won’t be a crowd – just Ammë, Ada, Aunt Irissë and Uncle Eöl.”
“It will still be a family dinner,” Tindomiel pointed out with a grin. “Everyone at the table will be related to you.”
Anariel knew this was classic younger sibling behavior – she’d done it to the twins on occasion – but she couldn’t help the glare. She took some satisfaction in watching Tinu reconsider whether antagonizing her was wise under the circumstances.
“I think Aunt Trouble is feeling deprived,” Elrohir observed.
“Yes, she’s already had plenty of time with us, so it’s just you she hasn’t gotten to size up at close quarters,” Elladan smirked.
Glaring at her brothers wouldn’t do any good. They’d probably laugh.
Anariel tried not to pout.
Any other night she’d probably be up for dinner with her grandparents, Grandmother’s bestie – who also happened to be Tinu’s mother-in-law – and Uncle Eöl, who was proving to be a lot more fun than they’d initially expected.
Not tonight, though.
Gil-galad had shown up yesterday. Last night’s feature had been truly epic, given he’d survived the fall of the Falas, seen the aftermath of Sirion, lived through the entire War of Wrath, and apparently been on Sauron’s mind quite a bit throughout the Second Age even before that war kicked off.
She’d been on edge all day with no good way to work off the resulting Slayer urge to hit things, and had resorted to hiding out, evading everyone but her brothers and Arador. Tinu probably could have found her, but her sister also recognized the symptoms of Slayer on edge and found other places to be.
So when her father had announced her parents intended to dine with just their children this evening, it had been very welcome. She had been looking forward to it. She hadn’t had a family meal – meaning just her parents and siblings – since she arrived at her parents’ house. (Yes, ok, it was partially her own fault, but she hadn’t expected that once they went to Tirion they’d be there indefinitely.)
She was being patient with the whole extended Noldorin family reunion, even though there were signs it was going to carry on a good while longer. But was a little bit of normal really so much to ask? Just one dinner?
Before she could open her mouth to complain, argue, or whine – and she honestly wasn’t sure which way it was going to go – her father intervened.
“My love, if you don’t feel equal to telling your mother ‘no’, I will.”
Everyone turned in unison to look at Elrond. Even Celebrían looked somewhat surprised.
“Galadriel is not the only one who hasn’t seen our daughter enough in the past long year. If she doesn’t want to hear that Anariel wants to dine with us, then she can hear that I am in a mood to sit down to dinner with my children tonight. All of them.”

Date: 2023-08-05 02:58 am (UTC)Elrond and Anariel are both out of sorts about not getting to have any quiet time at home, Anariel's just more obvious about it.
