We also feed birds year-round, as in our immediate neighbourhood nobody is doing it, but make sure it's done in the safest-possible way for the birds - catproof bird feeders, no spaces for the cats to ambush the birds as well as the best possible options for birds to see the cats and to get to safety. We don't provide any nesting options as this would be too dangerous, but the feeding approach works well so far; we've got a huge number of them coming (and go through quite a lot of seeds and suet balls), and thankfully, the number of victims to the cats is extremely low. One per year if at all - versus probably about 50-60 birds at least getting high-quality food all the time and have great hiding/sleeping places in the apple trees behind our cat fence which are fully overgrown with ivy. We had lots of birds even without feeding, as our natural garden is attracting also lots of insects, or windfall apples as we always have too many to deal with - and those attract all the blackbirds of the neighbourhood. They only feed from it when the apples are on the ground, so we can't prevent the occasional prey event, like the one I was describing when Snorri had got a blackbird. But it's been the first since last winter, and last winter it's also been just the one.
