Innumerable Stars 2022 Letter

Dear Innumerable Stars Author,

Hello! I hope you are as excited about the exchange as I am! I've done Innumerable Stars several times before and had a great experience. I hope the same will be true for you.

Please don't be intimidated by the number of tags - I prefer to list too much than too little. Better you're spoiled for choice than stuck. (Also, when presented with something as long as the tag set, my brain tends to get stuck on 'but why not ALL of them?' Narrowing it this far took work.)

I've offered prompts, or as close to them as I get, below. If there's anything you're concerned about or want to run by me before you get too into writing, feel free to comment here (I have anonymous comments on and screened). As far as ratings go, I will read whatever you're moved to write. I am eager to see what you create!

A word on the Do Not Wants. Aside from the first few, they are listed less because I never read them, than because I either need to be in a particular mood to read them, or because works featuring them are very hit or miss for me. I do not want you to invest your time and energy in something that I know will be anywhere from a toss-up to a long shot if I like it, or that I will only voluntarily read on a rainy day in March. (Just to be clear, I'm not saying my reading quirks make any sense whatsoever. Only that I have them.) In my mind, the ideal outcome to an exchange is me enthusiastically telling you and the world how much I love what you wrote and bookmarking it for re-reading!
DNW
• A/B/O
• Unrequested kinks (including but not limited to BDSM, scat/waterworks, vomit, blood play)
• Character Bashing - there are very few characters I loathe so please no character bashing
• Graphic Torture/Violence
• Rape/non-con
• Incest (sibling/sibling, parent/child, parent figure/child – specifically, no Maedhros or Maglor with Elrond or Elros)
• A requested ship written as one-sided, delusional/only in someone’s head, no love there anymore, or a hateship.
• 1st or 2nd person narrator
• Breaking up canon pairings*
• Modern AUs (coffee shop/college/etc.)
• AUs that involve changing the bodily nature of the characters (Vampire AU, merfolk AU, etc.)
• Genderswaps
• Plague/epidemic/pandemic

Silmarillion-specific DNWS:
• Narcissistic father Fëanor
• Abusive husband/father Eöl
• Evil Maeglin
• Terrible mother Elwing (Do the twins have Feelings about her leaving? Sure. Did she deliberately abandon them because all she cared about was the Silmaril? No thank you.) *As I've said I don't want breaking up of canon pairings, I should mention that Fingon/Maedhros is canon to me.

Not Rising to the Level of DNW, but should not be a main focus
• Mpreg
• Unrequested slash/femslash

General Likes
• Textual ghosts/filling in the blanks - Tolkien only gave us names or the bare bones of what happened as often than not. There's so much space there...
• Complex characters - The only straight-up villain I can stomach is Morgoth, and even he didn't start out evil. (As for Fëanor, Gandalf is still a fan in the late Third Age!) The elves and men we read about are people with all the positives and negatives that entails.
• Loyalty/devotion - not just in romantic/sexual relationships, but in familial and friend relationships also.
• Meanwhile back in... - Aman? Nargothrond while Finrod is off with Beren? Doriath after Luthien runs away? Anywhere "off screen" from the main canon narrative.
• Reinterpreting the narrative/an alternate perspective on the main events. (What did Cirdan think? How would the events be different told by Men of the First Age? Do elves have drinks in Aman while reading the Silmarillion and laugh uproariously at the version that gets taught as history?)
• Worldbuilding - details about locations, seasons, flora/fauna, food/drink, etc are wonderful.
• Not being strict about adherence to LaCE - I can write an essay about why I don't subscribe to LaCE being universally applied, or I can point you at other people's essays. Either way, strict LaCE isn't my fabric of choice.
• Happy moments, even in otherwise grim times
• Interaction between cultures
• Logistics/Trade/Manufacturing - where did stuff come from and how did it all work?

Finally, I don't know about you, but living in interesting times is wearing on me. I would deeply appreciate if you could focus more on the good times and flashes of happiness and less on the angst and awfulness. Obviously this is the Silmarillion, I do not expect pure fluff, but please no downer endings or "everyone dies".

Not Strictly Canon Relationships I Like
-Caranthir/Haleth
-Ecthelion/Glorfindel
-Elimmirë/Findis
-Finwë/Miriel/Indis
-Beren/Lúthien/Celegorm

Prompts, or at least vague ideas for my requests may be found below. All worldbuilding tags are guidelines only, use them as you see fit.

Request 1 - The Crossover Request
Legolas & Oropher - grandson meets grandfather for the first time in Aman. With a dwarf in tow. (Entirely up to you whether Legolas and Gimli are together or just hetero life mates.) How does this go?

Gimli & Aulë, Hobbits & Yavanna, Sam & Yavanna, Frodo & Irmo - Mortals meeting Valar. Valar meeting mortals (openly - up to you if they've been keeping tabs on them previously.)

Sam & Maglor, Sam & Daeron - Sam seems to appreciate poetry and song, what happens when he meets one of the greatest bards of the elves? (Or both. Feel free to combine these two if you want. Sometimes I don't think of these things until after the tagset closes.)

Eowyn & Tar-Míriel, Eowyn & Haleth, Haleth & Haleth, Ar-Pharazon & Denethor II - What would these two have to say to each other?

Glorfindel & Glorfindel - is this two of the same Glorfindel somehow meeting himself? Or are they in fact two different people? You decide.

Aragorn & Elros - I don't know if this is necessarily Aragorn meeting Elros (dream? time travel? afterlife?) or just Aragorn comparing himself to Elros as he looks around at all he has to do once Elrond and Galadriel ride off and it's him in his new life.

Aragorn/Arwen & Beren/Lúthien, Aragorn/Arwen & Idril/Tuor - Similar to the previous prompt - could be a meeting between the couples, could be one or the other pair reflecting on the other (Aragorn/Arwen looking back to the past, Beren/Lúthien commenting from whatever is beyond the circles of the world, Idril/Tuor discussing in Aman...)

The fox and Huan or Celegorm: Another set that can be combined if you so choose. I take responsibility for both of these tags, but I have no idea whatsoever what happens.

Request 2 - The Not Necessarily Canon-Compliant Request

Celegorm/Lúthien, Beren/Lúthien/Celegorm - Yes, I am still paddling this kayak. Guilty pleasure pairing or triad. (Dealer's choice.) Please no forced relationship/dubcon or bitterness at Beren on Celegorm's part if you choose to write this and still make it canon-compliant(ish) - if he's bitter, let it be at Namo getting involved to change the terms, or at fate in general for bringing him and Lúthien together too late.

Beren/Celegorm/Lúthien & Dior - In this case, who is Dior's bio-dad? (Do they even know?) What does it look like when the Feanorians demand the Silmaril from a son of Celegorm? (Or don't they?) If Dior still ends up dead - how does this affect his fate/choice?

Curufin & Dior - I have no idea what's going on here, I just thought it sounded interesting.

Celegorm & Eluréd & Elurín - This could be in light of Celegorm/Lúthien(/Beren) or played straight. Up to you if Celegorm somehow survives the 2nd Kinslaying, or if they meet in the Halls or sometime after they're all re-embodied.

Celegorm & Eluréd & Elurín & Elrond & Elros - same as above, though obviously Elros isn't eligible for the 'after they're all re-embodied' scenario.

Caranthir/Lúthien - I did not come up with this tag, but I am intrigued. If you're going to write it, please no forced relationship/non-con.

Elwing/Maglor - same as above

Curufin & Maeglin - do these two ever meet in Beleriand? Mandos? When re-embodied? I feel like they'd have a lot to talk about, regardless of what sort of relationship Curufin has with Celebrimbor at that point.

Maeglin & Sons of Fëanor - similar to Curufin & Maeglin, but with any or all of Curufin's brothers thrown into the mix. Could also potentially be Maeglin just thinking about them based on what he's heard from his mother.

Request 3 - Numenor & Peredhil

Finrod - If Finrod didn't get to visit Numenor, he would have driven the Valar batty with his puppy-dog eyes and pleas. You can write that if you wish, but I'm more interested in seeing Finrod actually get to visit Numenor. Could be in Elros time or anytime up until the elves stopped going.

Elros - why did he pick mortal? what did his life look like after he did? So many places this could go.

Elros & Osse & Uinen, Elros & Ulmo - What sort of relationship does the soon-to-be/new king of Numenor have with the Vala and maiar who will be so important to his people?

Numenorean ruler or consort & Elros - Could be Elros interacting with any of his heirs or their spouses. Could equally be one of those heirs or spouses wondering about Elros the man rather than Tar-Minyatur the historic figure or legend long after Elros has died.

Tindómiel - Tell me something about the first princess of Numenor.

Elrond & Tindómiel - Elrond surely met his niece at least once. (More than once? Maybe a long visit?) What did that look like?

Ar-Pharazon & Elros - Meeting in the afterlife? Pharazon's thoughts on Elros? (Elros' thoughts on Pharazon?)

Elros & Tar-Miriel - similar to above

Elwing & Elrond & Elros - the brief moment of time when they're still together and happy, OR one or more of them looking back on it

Nimloth of Doriath & Nimloth the Tree - What does Nimloth of Doriath think about sharing her name with the Tree? Did she ever visit?

Elros & Maglor - I've seen a fair bit of Elros & Maedhros, but what does Elros & Maglor look like? Does Elros ever encounter Maglor again after his choice? (Does Maglor ever turn up on Numenor to see how his foster son is doing these days?)

Elrond & Elros & Maedhros & Maglor - kidnap family. My taste tends to the less disturbing versions - no one's trying to kill anyone.

Elrond & Maglor, Elrond & Maedhros - Can be during the kidnap fam era, or Elrond looking back on it later; I have no specific prompts to offer, other than please write a version in which it was not terribly dysfunctional with them trying to kill each other.

Eärendil/Elwing & Elrond & Elros - original family. Could be before history happened, while they're still all in Sirion, or could be later, with one or more of them reflecting on/processing how things turned out.

Eärendil/Elwing - How did the peredhel/peredhel couple happen? And what did it look like when they did?

Aegnor/Andreth - The elf/man pairing without children - or were there? Also, it seems like Aegnor/Andreth might be a popular tale on Numenor, but one whose interpretation changes as time goes by. So...multiple approaches here, pick whichever one you fancy.

Request 4 - The Lindar

Lúthien & Melian & Vana - Surprise me.

Dior/Nimloth & Eluréd & Elurín & Elwing - the happy family before it all went terribly wrong (or looking back at it afterwards?)

Eluréd & Elurín - Did they die? Really? If you insist, what happened after that?

Melian & Sauron - unfriends forever? enemies glaring at each other across the mountains? "That's my girl" to Lúthien when she comes home with the story of how she beat him?

Melian/Thingol - I get what Thingol saw in her. But what did she see in him? (I don't go in for eldritch Melian.)

Melian/Thingol & Daeron & Lúthien - Daeron as Lúthien's sibling puts a whole different spin on him running to tell Thingol about Beren, the sneaking out, etc...

Thingol & Olwë & Elmo - the three brothers on the Journey or reunited in Aman. (Or reflecting on the relationship while sundered?)

Thingol & Olwë - same as above, but maybe with a bit more focus on what made Thingol feel so strongly that banning a whole language seemed reasonable when he found out about the Kinslaying?

Elwing & Nimloth, Elwing & Dior, Elwing & Melian, Elwing & Thingol - I would love to see more about Elwing and her parents or great-grandparents.

Olwë & Finarfin, Olwë & Finrod, Olwë & Galadriel - Similarly, I would love to see more about Olwë and his son-in-law or grandchildren.

Olwë & Fëanor - Was there any relationship prior to Fëanor showing up demanding the ships? What were Olwë's private thoughts at that time? What did he think when he looked back on it later?

Olwë/Olwë's Wife - insert 'free real estate' gif here.

Elwing, Celeborn - more of either of these two will never be a bad thing. Possibly some Celeborn before he met Galadriel?

Request 5 - Aman

Noldor of Finarfin's host - I'm not actually sure if this is the ones who followed him during the Flight of the Noldor and came back, or the ones he took to the War of Wrath. But either way, it sounds like an interesting group to explore.

Noldor who remained in Tirion - We've heard all about the hardships of the Exiles, but it doesn't seem like it was all happy fun times in Tirion after they left. A major portion of the population was suddenly gone, as was the light. You can't tell me society just kept humming along smoothly.

Anairë & Eärwen & Findis & Lalwen & Nerdanel - Did they all get along? What happens to them during the Flight of the Noldor? (Did Lalwen leave?) And after?

Anairë & Eärwen & Nerdanel - the women who married Finwë's sons. Eärwen is a king's daughter, but Nerdanel isn't, and we know nothing about Anairë's parents. Is the transition to princess of the Noldor an easy one, or is it a bumpy ride? Do they all get along even once their husbands start quarreling?

Elemmírë/Findis - More of this pairing is always welcome.

Elwing & Turgon & Elenwe - after Turgon and Elenwë are alive again, what do they think of their granddaughter-in-law? Can be as serious or silly as you want to make it.

Finwë/Indis/Míriel - really, what if they had things under control until the Valar decided marriage was 1 man + 1 woman?

Maglor/Maglor's Wife -- who was she? Did she go with him? What happened??

Aulë & Sauron - What does Aulë think of his former student?

Aule & Mahtan & Nerdanel - before or after Fëanor. (During if you must.)

Eönwë & Sauron - Eönwë ordered Sauron to return to Valinor, and somehow Sauron just...doesn't? How did that work? Do they have prior history? What does Eönwë think after Sauron goes on the lam?

Indis, Ingwë, Ingwion - We hear very little about what the Vanyar were up to, or Indis spending time with them.

Varda, Nessa, Estë, Vána - I don't have prompts so much as a desire to see more Valie content.

Irmo/Estë - If you are the person who submitted this tag, go for it.

Request 6 - Gondolin

Elenwe/Turgon - for me, Turgon is a wife guy, full stop. I don't know when he met Elenwë, but once he did, that was it, she was the one.

Turgon & the Lords of Gondolin - how does Turgon know them originally? What makes them follow him? What do they think of his idea to go build a secret city? Are they ok with staying there? What happens after the Nirnaeth? (Doesn't need to include all of them if that's a stretch.)

Idril & Maeglin & Turgon  - the completely functional royal family of Gondolin. (Note: no creep Maeglin.)

Idril + Maeglin - I'm not sure what this looks like, but feel free to show me.

Idril/Tuor & Turgon - what does Turgon make of his daughter announcing she wants to marry a Man, even if he is the messenger of Ulmo?

Mandos & Tuor - HOW DID HE GET TO STICK AROUND IN AMAN?

Eärendil - the child, the man, the star - your pick.

Earendil & the Lords of Gondolin - what do the lords of Gondolin think of the king's grandson? What does he think of them? (Doesn't need to include all of them if that's a stretch.)

Eärendil & Turgon - First grandchild. There is no way Turgon did not spoil this kid rotten.

Eärendil & Idril/Tuor - the happy family before the fall of the city, on the run after, life in Sirion, or Eärendil watching his parents sail off into the sunset.

Eärendil & Maeglin - I personally think the whole thing is far more tragic if these two actually had a great relationship until Maeglin got captured.

Eöl & Maeglin, Aredhel & Maeglin, Aredhel/Eöl & Maeglin, Aredhel/Eöl  - no creepy or abusive Eöl please

Maeglin & Morgoth - the one exception to my no angst/keep it light general request - what did Morgoth think when he realized he didn't have just any elf of Gondolin, but Turgon's nephew?

Glorfindel & Ecthelion & Egalmoth - Lords of Gondolin being awesome together.

Ecthelion/Glorfindel - anything but the dying part

Ecthelion, Glorfindel - again, anything but the dying

Request 7 - Fëanor & Co

Fëanor & Amras & Amrod, Fëanor & Caranthir, Fëanor & Celegorm, Fëanor & Curufin, Fëanor & Maedhros, Fëanor & Maglor - Fëanor and his sons. Can combine several if you wish, but I would really prefer to see him focusing on his sons one on one. (You can do Fëanor & Amras or Fëanor & Amrod if you like - F&A&A is because I was out of nominations.)

Fëanor & Fingolfin & Finarfin - Fëanor and his brothers. Did he dislike them from day 1, or was he ok early on but got crankier once Morgoth started stirring the pot?

Fëanor & Morgoth - GET THEE GONE... ok, it doesn't have to be that moment. Obviously Fëanor was not a fan once he figured out what was going on. But what did this relationship look like before he told Morgoth to get off his lawn?

Fëanor/Nerdanel - it started out so romantic, but what happened later? (I won't say at the end, because I'm firmly of the opinion he's coming back from Mandos eventually.)

Fingon/Maedhros -  husbands. Don't know if they made it public, but totally husbands.

Aredhel/Celegorm  - not spouses, but maybe might have been heading that way before the Exile? Or was it just a physical thing? What did Celegorm think of the whole Eöl business?

Amras & Amrod - I have no concrete prompt, surprise me.

Amras & Amrod & Aredhel & Galadriel - best friends for life (and beyond)? At each others' throats (figuratively, at least until Alqualondë?) I come down on 'best friends', but you're the one writing/arting.

Celebrimbor & Curufin - Good dad until the Silmarils got in the way? Or was it more a high-pressure relationship the whole time and Nargothrond was the final straw?

Celegorm & Maglor - I don't think this tag was me. If it was you, I am intrigued.

Maglor & Nerdanel & Nienna - Again, I am intrigued but have no prompt for it.

Celebrimbor - He meant well... No Silvergifting.

Celebrimbor & Narvi & Sauron - I thought there was a Celebrimbor & Narvi tag, but apparently not, so I shall take these two with a side of Sauron if that's the only option.

Azaghâl & Maedhros - how did this alliance come about?

Request 8 - The Grab Bag

Galadriel - I think this is my only Galadriel request. No dark Galadriel, but other than that, you have free rein.

Celeborn & Thranduil - What is the relationship between these two?

Elwing & Gandalf  - Did Elwing get to talk to him before he headed off to Middle-earth? What about after? (I feel like there may have been some choice comments after.)

Elwing & Nienna - It feels like Elwing spending some time with Nienna might have been necessary and healthy.

Lúthien - Anything prior to Mandos.

Celebrían/Elrond -

Celebrían/Elrond + Gil-galad - Not entirely sure what this looks like, but go for it.

Elrond & Glorfindel - Glorfindel is sent back in the Second Age to help. How did that go in the early days? (I can't see Elrond just taking on trust that he's who he says he is...)

Elrond, Eluréd, Elurín - no specific prompt, would just like to see more.

Elrond & Thranduil - Before or after the founding of Rivendell. What does this relationship look like? Elrond could have called himself a king had he wanted to. Thranduil did. Is there a friendship, mutual respect, or a huge difference in worldviews that takes serious work to overcome?
